How to be best prepared for the theory test for cars

Ungdommer i klasserom

Are you finally getting your driving licence? Then the theory test for passenger car class B is the first hurdle you must pass. You must pass this test before you can register for the driving test.

Oslo Team Traffic School offers traffic training for passenger cars, both with automatic and manual transmission, and helps you all the way until you stand there with your licence in your hand.

The theory test isn't just about memorising signs and rules. It measures whether you understand traffic and can make safe choices as a driver. According to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, only 57 per cent passed the theory test in 2024 (Source: Norwegian Public Roads Administration, 2025). It says something about how important it is to prepare well.

What is the theory test?

The theory test for class B consists of 45 questions, and at least 38 must be correct to pass. The content covers traffic rules, signposting, risk assessment, environment, first aid and simple technical knowledge. The test is taken digitally at a traffic station and lasts up to 90 minutes. You get the result immediately.

A passing result is valid for three years. If the test is not passed, at least 14 days must pass before the next attempt.

How to best prepare for your car theory test

Good preparation is not about reading as much as possible, but about understanding what you read. Many people fail because they rely on cramming or random online tests without explanation.

Here are some tips for better learning:

  • Create a simple reading plan over several weeks
  • Use theory book or app with explanations and updated questions
  • Read slowly and understand why each answer is right or wrong
  • Practise under time pressure to get used to the test situation
  • Take extra care of topics you find difficult
  • Divide reading into short sessions rather than long skips

Common mistakes people make ahead of the theory test

Even with a lot of practice, it's easy to make some classic mistakes. Many underestimate topics such as risk understanding and the environment, or read quickly without thinking about why the answers are correct.

These are typical traps you should avoid:

  • Starting late and reading under pressure
  • Using old samples without explanations
  • Overlooks less intuitive topics such as health and driver support systems
  • Focus on practical experience to replace theoretical knowledge
  • All this can lead to good candidates failing anyway.

What happens on test day?

The theory test for cars is completed on a PC at a traffic station. Bring valid ID and turn up in good time. It is possible to mark questions you are unsure of and go back later.

If you fail, you will be told how many correct answers you had, but not which questions were incorrect. The next attempt can only be taken after 14 days, and you must pay a new fee.

Theory and practice belong together

Although the theory is written, it is closely linked to what you learn in the car. The obligation to give way, speed adaptation, traffic flow and signs are easier to understand when you have experienced them in practice.

Several students emphasise that our driving instructors explain how things should be done in practice, and not just how. Many students say that this is precisely what makes the theory more understandable. Teaching is offered in both Norwegian and English, and is organised according to your needs.

An important step forward

The theory test gives you the necessary basis for travelling safely in traffic and is an important step on the road to obtaining your driving licence. Here at Oslo Team Trafikkskole, you can be sure that we always give you the best possible help towards the finish line.
